Martha Lou Northcutt, 70, of Denison, and Willis, Okla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, at Texoma Medical Center in Denison. Born on Sept. 20, 1939, in Gainesville to the late Ralph Milton Suddath and Gladis Irene Camp Suddath, Lou grew up in Marietta, Okla. The family later moved to Denton, where she graduated from Denton High School in 1957. Lou attended Oklahoma State University, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Lou continued her education at the University of Oklahoma and then at North Texas State University, where she received her bachelor's of education degree in English. Her relentless desire to serve others led her to a nursing degree from Grayson County College in 1972, which was followed by two master's degrees, the first in psychiatric nursing and the second in community health from Texas Woman's University. Her studies culminated in her certification as an advance practice nurse. Lou had an active nursing career in a variety of responsible positions for more than 30 years. Lou's family came to Oklahoma well before statehood. Her father was a descendant of Peter Pitchlynn, a chief of the Choctaw Indian tribe, and one of the tribe's first representatives in Washington, DC. Lou was proud of her Choctaw heritage and was active in tribal affairs thoughout her life. Her mother's family settled on a ranch north of Paul's Valley, Indian Territory, in the mid-1800s and included members of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes. Her father's grandfather was Joseph Roff, the founder of Roff, Okla. Lou's family were true Sooners, in every sense of the word. On Jan. 27, 1962, she married Delmas Lynn Northcutt in Gainesville. Delmas's family had also arrived in Indian Territory in the mid-1800s, so their union joined two early Oklahoma settler families. Lou lived most of her adult life on Northcutt Farm in Willis and was the quintessential rancher's wife. She got great joy from her dogs, cats, horses, and other animals. Each year, she and Delmas rolled up their sleeves and worked cattle side-by-side. She was a member of the Madill Daughters Club and served as its president during the 1970s. She loved Lake Texoma and spent many hours on her houseboat, fishing, swimming, and hosting friends. Lou was a life-long Democrat, enjoyed a good political fight, and worked hard to get many talented people, including her husband, elected to public office. For the last few years, she was an active member of the Park Avenue Church of Christ in Denison. She is survived by her husband of Denison; her daughter, Lynn Northcutt Vega, grandsons Richard Wiley Vega and Delmas Glenn Vega, all of Bogota, Colombia; and sisters, Betty Lockett of Gaithersburg, Md., Jane Theodore (Nick) of Keller, and Sue Hovey (Al), Ormond Beach, Fla. Lou was preceded in death by her parents and younger brother, Thomas Milton Suddath. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at Watts Memorial Chapel, Madill, Okla. Interment will be in the Willis Cemetery, within the boundaries of the original Rowland - Northcutt Farm, overlooking Lake Texoma. Todd Catteau, Skip Henry, Dr. Maurice Duperre, and Wiley Vega will speak during the service. Condolences may be sent to Wattsfuneralhome.com or to Delmas Northcutt at 1301 W. Woodard, Denison, TX 75020. Visitation will be from 1 -9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 28 at the Watts Funeral Home in Madill, Okla. The family will be present from 6 -8 p.m. Pallbearers will include her two grandsons, two nephews, Hal Theodore and Tom Theodore, Ernest Hill, and Cameron Keeton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Cabaniss, Dan Little, Lawrence Henry, Ronnie Oliver, Cebert Cox, and Audeen Jefferies.
